IME-420 Home - the Virtual Enterprise

    Course Description

The Virtual Enterprise represents a new organization for the 21st century, enabled by new information technologies and evolving to compete in a global economy. This course examines the development of the virtual enterprise and explores strategies for managing in virtual and matrixed organizations. Students review a range of electronic collaboration tools for virtual work environments. This term the emphasis will be on immersive Web technologies such as SecondLife, There, et. al., as well as collaboration tools such as wiki's, Skype, and of course IM.

IT IS UNDERSTOOD THAT THIS TERM THE CLASS WILL BE VERY 'EXPERIMENTAL' AND SO SOMEWHAT UNSTRUCTURED. I'D LIKE YOU TO HAVE PLENTY OF HANDS ON EXPERIENCE.

Students will be expected to become familiar with tools to help them collaborate with each other on a term project. I'm thinking of projects oriented toward the student evaluation of businesses (unversities?) with a presence in the virtual world.

    What is a Virtual Enterprise?
Even though it’s a relatively new term, (or perhaps because of it) the definition of a ‘virtual enterprise’ is changing/evolving. The chief reason for this is the Web itself is changing and evolving.

Just above, I describe it as a “a new organization for the 21st century, enabled by new information technologies and evolving to compete in a global economy”

Perhaps it’s best to define Virtual Enterprises by describing them. Ironically (ironic because it is still such a recent phenomenon) I’ll start with a ‘traditional view’ of the virtual enterprise:
These are enterprises that use technology tools to collaborate across time and distance. For example: between distant offices across multiple time zones; or between non-collocated employees

Now, let’s add the more contemporary view:
Enterprises that have a presence in a virtual environment. <- This is what we will emphasize this term.

Lastly, Marlene Biseda, notes that there are common elements across “virtual” frameworks:
    • Members working across space, time and boundaries (Snow, Lipnack & Stamps, 1999).
    • Technology as an enabler (Lewicki & Dineen, 2002).
    • Success based on individuals contributing their knowledge (Mohrman, 1999; Noe & Simmering, 2002).

The last line in Professor Biseda's notes are key, so...
Students - add your views and input as to what constitutes a virtual enterprise. Click on 'Add a comment' and ... well.. add a comment.
